Civil Unions In Illinois couples of the same or opposite sexes can enter into a civil union. This provides them with the same rights, responsibilities, protection and benefits marriage provides under state law. Civil unions, marriages between persons of the same sex, or any other similar arrangement other than common law marriages that are entered into and valid in other states are recognized in Illinois. Civil unions can be dissolved under the Illinois act providing for divorces. Currently the effect of civil unions under Federal law is not clear. || Back
